How Important? Nearly Essential

Notes: This little sucker has a 6 gallon capacity and is puts out 3hp peak. I didn't have one of these until recently, when the Master Electrician decided that I'd better get my act together. Once you have one of these, you realize that it's kind of goofy to get along without one. Sure, you can sweep up a lot and do an okay job, but having this thing at the ready means that you will clean up a lot more, and a clean work site is much more pleasant, precise and safe. I tend to err on overcapacity, but the size and power of this one are just right for the home studio builder. Put it this way - 3 hp gives you about a second to decide if you want to suck up that drywall screw or save it.

On the minus side, this model isn't great about the tool storage, and it's always a pain to have one more thing that has to be on the floor. In addition, cleaning the filter is a very messy experience, best done by knocking it against the wall while you're holding it inside a garbage bag. Still, I'd strongly recommend splurging and getting a vacuum, and this brand in particular. I like it much better than that hunk of crap Bosch one that I got a few years ago.
